Oracle Supports W3C’s XQuery 1.0 Standard

Enables Organizations to Fully Embrace Web 2.0 and Integration of XML and Relational Data

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif.,   14-FEB-2007 05:00 AM    Furthering its commitment to open standards, Oracle today announced support for the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) XQuery 1.0, a new standard for accessing XML data. Over the years, Oracle has played a key role in the development of XQuery, participating in the W3C XML Query Working Group and introducing Oracle(r) Database 10g Release 2, the first commercial database to support the standard in 2005. With a long-standing history of supporting XML in many different customer environments and several Oracle products already using XQuery, customers are assured that their evolving data management needs will be met, as the move to Web 2.0 continues.

XQuery will play a significant role in enterprise computing as organizations increasingly merge their XML and relational data sources in the Web 2.0 world. A comprehensive query language for XML data, XQuery enables the data mining of all structured and unstructured data sources ranging from emails, photos and Web pages to multi-terabyte relational databases. Enterprise content management and Service-Oriented Architectures are among the drivers fueling the growth of XML data and will benefit from the XQuery standard. The virtually seamless integration of XQuery with Oracle Databases further broadens Oracle’s ability to manage all types of data with a full-featured, high performance database-native XQuery engine.

“Oracle celebrates with the XML community and is delighted with the progression of XQuery to formal recommendation status,” said Don Deutsch, vice president, Standards Strategy and Architecture, Oracle. “Our leadership of and participation in the XQuery language definition effort, particularly in the work of our technical representative to the XML Query Working Group, reflects our corporate philosophy to support open standards forums like W3C. The formalization of the XQuery standard gives our customers further confidence in our products, Oracle Berkeley DB and XML DB, which are already using XQuery.”

Oracle has a long history of providing technologies to help manage many different types of non-relational data, including mobile, geo-spatial, multi-media, text and XML. Oracle was the first vendor with XML capabilities in the database and has been providing XML support for more than five years, since the introduction of Oracle9i Database. The company has continued to enhance its XML-support through Oracle Database 10g with XQuery specification support and XML DB. Additionally, Oracle will continue to actively participate in the W3C XML XQuery Working Group.
